(In the Name of).
L’esigua pattuglia tricolore è rintracciabile col lanternino.

SYNOPSIS | In the cold light of winter, 1915 Camille Claudel bends down once again to pick up a stone and examine it. It’s almost as if we are watching a sculptor at work: in her mind she appears to be transforming this simple piece of rock into something new. But then she drops the stone, never to create her art again. This woman’s obsession with the idea that she is being persecuted by those who envy her – as well as by her former lover, Auguste Rodin – has prompted her family to commit her to a psychiatric clinic in the south of France. The film chronicles her endless vigil, hoping to find understanding and recognition as an artist, but also to receive a visit from her beloved brother, the writer Paul Claudel.
The correspondence between this famous brother and sister provided the inspiration for Bruno Dumont’s film. Once again he has elected to work with non-professional actors: mentally handicapped people play the patients at the clinic and therefore partially themselves. The camera rarely ventures outside the thick walls of the institution, behind which a woman has been incarcerated; her creativity withering away. And perhaps therein lies the real madness.

SYNOPSIS | Sascha lives in a village on the Kola Peninsular in northern Russia and dedicatedly manages what is left of an old collective farm. He gets on well with his farm workers who respect him and also tolerate his more or less clandestine love-affair with Anya, a secretary at the local government office. But then Sascha is suddenly faced with a dilemma: the district’s self-seeking administrators, none of whom could be termed squeamish, offer him a lucrative deal for the farm. In legal terms, Sascha doesn’t have much of a leg to stand on since his lease on the farm was only agreed with a handshake. The pressure mounts, and even more so when his employees convince him to stand firm. Against the backdrop of a landscape exposed to the elements, this unflinching man’s destiny takes its course. In this tragedy of a decent man who refuses to surrender to a quagmire of greed and corruption risks everything that is dear to him, director Boris Khlebnikov develops a story from rural Russia into an existential human drama.

SYNOPSIS | Bettie is in her early sixties. Having run out of cigarettes, she climbs into her car and drives off, leaving her mother, customers and the employees of her Breton restaurant to fend for themselves. But her search drags on. The shops are all shut and Bettie has no desire to return to her old life. She has just learned that her long-standing lover has gone off with a younger woman. And living with her difficult mother is no picnic. Bettie decides to take a break and drives on. She shares a cigarette with an old man and listens to his tragic love story. After a rollicking party she wakes up next morning in a hotel bed, with someone beside her. She gets to know her grandson and winds up with him at a picturesque hotel by the sea, in the midst of a reunion of French beauty queens from the year 1969.
Emmanuelle Bercot wrote the role of Bettie especially for Catherine Deneuve. But with every kilometre Bettie puts between herself and her old life, we forget that we are looking at Catherine Deneuve, international cinematic icon, and simply see Bettie, a woman who wants more from life than just a cigarette break.

SYNOPSIS | A Roma family living far away from the urban centres of Bosnia-Herzegovina. The father Nazif salvages metal from old cars and sells it to a scrap-dealer. The mother Senada keeps the house tidy, cooks, bakes and cares for their two small daughters. One day, she feels a sharp pain in her abdomen. At the clinic she is told there is something wrong with the baby she is carrying: "They say it’s dead." She is at risk of septicaemia and they must operate immediately. But Senada has no medical insurance; since the operation will cost much more than the family can afford the hospital’s head refuses to treat her. A race against time and Senada’s mounting sense of hopelessness begins …
Danis Tanovic weaves these dramatic events, his protagonists’ economic hardship and fear of death into a wintery tale. The fact that the non-professional cast are re-enacting an episode from their own lives contributes greatly to the film’s sense of authenticity and social realism. At the same time, the film demonstrates one Roma family’s extraordinary courage and unerring will to survive.

SYNOPSIS | Gloria is a 58 year old divorcée. Her children have all left home but she has no desire to spend her days and nights alone. Determined to defy old age and loneliness, she rushes headlong into a whirl of singles’ parties on the hunt for instant gratification – which just leads repeatedly to disappointment and emptiness. But then she meets Rodolfo, an ex-naval officer seven years her senior to whom she feels romantically inclined. She even begins to imagine a permanent relationship. However, the encounter presents unexpected challenges and Gloria gradually finds herself being forced to confront her own dark secrets.
Sebastián Lelio’s third feature film is a tragicomedy of fragile hopes and painful truths, a portrait of a powerful woman who manages to assert her own strength and independence in spite of a maelstrom of conflicting feelings. The story unfolds against the backdrop of current political developments in Chile, incorporating the murky waters of forty years of Chilean history.

SYNOPSIS | Canada, the summer of 1898. A group of German settlers travel towards the far north in covered wagons with packhorses and their few possessions in tow. The seven travellers set off from Ashcroft, the final railway station. Along with their leader, flamboyant businessman Wilhelm Laser, they are hoping to find their fortune in the recently discovered goldfields of Dawson, but they have no idea of the stresses and dangers which lie ahead on their 2,500 kilometre journey. Before long uncertainty, cold weather and exhaustion begin to take their toll and conflicts escalate. The journey leads these men and women deeper and deeper into a menacing wilderness.
Berlin director Thomas Arslan’s protagonists are constantly on the move. We get to know them via their daily routines: there’s the gangster Trojan from Arslan’s "Im Schatten" (shown in the Berlinale’s Forum section in 2010); the young Turkish woman Deniz who appeared in "Der schöne Tag" (which screened in the Forum in 2001); and now Emily. As precarious as their journey across unchartered territory may be, Emily’s certain of one thing – there’s no going back to her old life.

SYNOPSIS | Suzanne Simonin describes her life of suffering in letters. As a young woman she is sent to a convent against her will. Since her parents cannot afford the dowry required for a marriage befitting her rank they decide she must instead become a nun. Although a kind and understanding Mother Superior helps her to learn the convent’s daily routine, Suzanne’s desire for freedom remains unabated. When the Mother Superior dies, Suzanne finds herself faced with reprisals, humiliation and harassment at the hands of the new Abbess and the other Sisters. For many years, Suzanne is subjected to bigotry and religious fanaticism.
Denis Diderot’s novel has been adapted for the screen several times. In 1966 Jacques Rivette made a film version with Anna Karina and Liselotte Pulver so daringly critical of the church it was temporarily banned by the French censors. Guillaume Nicloux however concentrates on the fate of a young woman pitted against a merciless system which crushes the individual. His film gradually divorces itself from the circumstances of this particular story to describe a universal drama.

SYNOPSIS | Layla is a single mother living with her son in Johannesburg, getting by with casual work. After training as a polygraph operator she manages to secure a job with a company specialising in lie detectors and security. On her way to her new workplace she is involved in an accident which will fundamentally change her life. Layla becomes entangled in a web of lies and deceit. The truth could lead to the loss of her son.
For her third feature film Pia Marais – who has lived in Berlin for many years – returned to South Africa where she grew up to make this classic thriller. She uses the genre to take a look at a country which still bears the scars of apartheid. In this way, everyday life in South Africa enhances the tension in the screenplay which she co-wrote with Horst Markgraf. Almost casually, "Layla Fourie" develops into a political thriller which takes the audience into the paranoia, fear and mistrust of a society that is still profoundly affected by racial conflict.

SYNOPSIS | Is she tired of life or love? Why else is Haewon falling asleep in a restaurant? Haewon, a student, feels abandoned. Her mother is about to emigrate to Canada and Haewon has decided to end her affair with one of her professors because he is so unsupportive. Not only do Haewon’s fellow students get wind of the affair, but her married paramour refuses to accept that their relationship is over. Confused, Haewon withdraws into her shell. Other men cross her path which eventually leads her to an old fortress in the mountains above Seoul. There she finds not only rice wine and a familiar melody, but also a bold escape route.
In his previous films, Hong Sangsoo explored love’s unfathomable paths and the impossibility of relationships from the point of view of his male heroes. Now he changes perspective. However, the emotional world of his protagonists is no less puzzling and fickle – just like Haewon herself, a young woman who likes to dream. And perhaps this film is simply one of these dreams, from which she will awake to find herself in the strangest of places. For who can say how unreal our waking life is, or how real our dreams?

SYNOPSIS | Her mother goes off to Kenya in search of beach boys willing to provide her with amorous services. Her staunchly Catholic aunt is absorbed in house-to-house evangelism. Thus, thirteen-year-old Melanie spends the holidays in a diet camp in the Austrian mountains. In between physical training and nutritional counselling, nightly pillow fights and a secret bout of binge drinking at the local disco, she falls in love with the doctor and camp director, who is forty years her senior. Melanie uses all her seductive wiles to win him over …
In the third part of his ‘paradise’ trilogy – following "Paradies: Liebe" and "Paradies: Glaube" – Ulrich Seidl pits the deep-seated human desire for love and security against harsh reality. From the sterile surroundings of the diet camp, Seidl filters impeccably pristine, minimalist images in which any hint of sensuality, passion or anarchy would appear to be a complete anathema. And yet "Paradies: Hoffnung" is the most tender of the three ‘paradise’ films, for his young protagonists bear within them a spark of hope that love is not just an illusion, but can be an honest and powerful emotion.

SYNOPSIS | They are both on the run: the man with the dog he isn’t allowed to own because Islamic law deems it to be unclean, and the young woman who took part in an illicit party on the shores of the Caspian Sea. They barricade themselves into a secluded villa with curtained windows and eye each other suspiciously. Why has he shaved his head? How does she know he is being followed by the police? They are both now prisoners in a house without a view in the midst of a hostile environment. The voices of police can be heard in the distance, but so too can the calming sound of the sea. One time they look at the night sky full of stars before again withdrawing behind their protective walls.
Are we looking at outlaws, in all senses of the word? Or are the man and the young woman merely phantoms, figments of the imagination of a filmmaker who is no longer allowed to work? The director enters the scene and the curtains are pulled open. Reality reinstates itself, but fiction closes in on it again and again. An absurd situation: two characters from a screenplay, both searching for and observing their director.

SYNOPSIS | One cold evening in March, Barbu is tearing down the streets 50 kilometres per hour over the speed limit when he knocks down a child. The boy dies shortly after the accident. A prison sentence of between three and fifteen years awaits. High time for his mother, Cornelia, to intervene. A trained architect and member of Romania’s upper class, who graces her bookshelves with unread Herta Müller novels and is fond of flashing her purse full of credit cards, she commences her campaign to save her lethargic, languishing son. Bribes, she hopes, will persuade the witnesses to give false statements. Even the parents of the dead child might be appeased by some cash.
Calin Peter Netzer portrays a mother consumed by self-love in her struggle to save her lost son and her own, long since riven family. In quasi-documentary style, the film meticulously reconstructs the events of one night and the days that follow, providing insights into the moral malaise of Romania’s bourgeoisie and throwing into sharp relief the state of societal institutions such as the police and the judiciary.

SYNOPSIS | Alvin and Lance spend the summer of 1988 in a deserted, fire-damaged forest, their monotonous task to repaint the markings on an endless country road. Lance finds it hard to cope with their isolation in the wilderness far away from parties and girls – as opposed to serious Alvin who writes passionate letters from afar to his girlfriend, Lance’s elder sister. Whenever he has time off, Alvin enjoys heading still further into the desolate forest on the hunt for ghosts and derelict houses. He and Lance meander through the woods in a little vehicle, argue, fight, and make up. Throughout the long, oppressive summer they only meet one other person – a mysterious lorry driver who plies them with homemade booze and then disappears as suddenly as he appeared.
In this remake of the Icelandic film "Either Way" by Hafsteinn Gunnar Sigurðsson, director David Gordon Green has succeeded in creating a piece that is part laconic comedy, part philosophical road movie and exudes the visual poetry of his own early independent films.

SYNOPSIS | Steve Butler appears to be on track for a brilliant career. At least that is what his cool bosses in their classy New York offices are promising. But if truth be told, he is expected to achieve the impossible: he and his colleague Sue must persuade the inhabitants of a typical American small town to sell the right to extract natural gas from underneath their farmlands to a large energy firm. A new method known as ‘fracking’ – in which fractures are created in subterranean shale – will allow extraction of formerly inaccessible gas reserves. Butler persuades the locals to give up their long since unprofitable farms, promising them fabulous purchase prices. He neglects to mention the risks of the method which involves the uncontrolled hydraulic injection of dangerous chemicals into the ground. But then he encounters resistance from the locals; in addition, a travelling environmental activist calls the entire project into question. Steve, a country boy himself who is all too aware of the truth, has to decide whose side he is on. Is he the agent of the energy corporation’s profiteering or will he return to his roots? A political thriller about a contemporary ecological conflict.

SYNOPSIS | Anxiety, nervous sweating and palpitations make Emily Taylor’s life a misery. Yet this young woman has every reason to be happy now that her beloved husband is due to be released from prison. But after his return her emotional state deteriorates still further. The psychotropic drugs she is prescribed stabilise her condition but lead to blackouts. One day her husband is found in their apartment, brutally stabbed to death. The trail of blood leads to Emily, who claims not to remember anything. Ambitious psychiatrist Dr Jonathan Banks takes on her case and examines the side effects of her medication.
Steven Soderbergh generally uses genre cinema to highlight political scandals or social conditions. Having revealed the dark side of US narco-policy in his thriller "Traffic", which screened at the Berlinale in 2001, in this current psychological thriller he investigates the machinations of pharmaceutical companies. In order to find the truth, his protagonist Banks must lock horns with the dubious psychiatrist Dr Erica Siebert and swallow a number of bitter pills indeed.

SYNOPSIS | After his mother dies of cancer, Charlie travels to Bucharest: his late mother appeared in a vision and instructed him to go there to free his mind and heart. But another death occurs when he’s still on the plane. This time it’s a fellow passenger he’s only just met. Now Charlie has another promise to fulfil: he is to hand over the deceased’s luggage to his daughter Gabi. He does so – and falls head over heels in love. However, the psychotic boss of a drug cartel has already laid claim to this beautiful musician, and has absolutely no intention of giving her up to an ignorant American. But Charlie is determined to protect Gabi and prove his love to her. On the run from Romanian killer commandos, passing through grubby youth hostels and strip clubs straight out of a pothead’s dream, he grows in stature. But will this be enough?
The transformation of a ‘Transformer’ – Shia La Boeuf plays a naïve average joe and hopeless romantic pitted against a bunch of ruthless gangsters in order to save his life and his love. A fast-paced, upbeat feature debut which toys laconically with many American cliché of Europe’s Wild East.

SYNOPSIS | During a medical examination, 13-year-old Aslan is humiliated in front of a load of his fellow pupils. The incident unleashes his latent personality disorder. Plagued by self-doubt, he strives for cleanliness and perfection and is obsessed with trying to control everything around him. His compulsion draws Aslan, who lives with his grandmother in a village in Kazakhstan, into increasingly difficult situations. He abhors the way most of his fellow pupils are held in the sway of a criminal scheme, in which Bolat, one of Aslan’s tormentors, is also involved. Bolat blackmails the younger children into paying him protection money; he has nothing but contempt for ostracised Aslan.
In his first feature-length drama, Emir Baigazin delineates the clash between an individual and the mechanisms of marginalisation and violence. Set against the growing brutalisation of public life, and told in a series of austere tableaux and symbolic scenes from the animal kingdom, the story unfolds of a boy who dares to fight back, and in doing so could well destroy himself.

SYNOPSIS | A lonely bus stop, a trumpet-playing scout and a woman who refuses to pay him anything for his off-tune performance. This dryly humorous opening sets the tone for rest of the film which tells the story of Vic, a woman who has just been released from prison and who is on the hunt for some peace and quiet. She moves into a relative’s house in the Canadian forest and receives a visit from her lover, Flo. The two of them take each day as it comes, exploring the countryside in a golf cart and enjoying the scenery. Life could be so wonderful – if only Vic’s rather unconventional probation officer wouldn’t keep turning up. Vic also finds her girlfriend’s sorties to local bars unsettling. A friendly woman in the neighbourhood, a gardener, soon turns out to be a shadow from the past; signs of impending threat begin to multiply and even the forest seems to have treacherous traps in store.
With his film’s collection of eccentric characters, his bizarre directing ideas and the work’s mysterious atmosphere, film critic and documentary/drama director Denis Côté creates an artificial world with its own completely unpredictable reality.

SYNOPSIS | Adam is a Catholic priest who discovered his calling as a servant of God at the relatively late age of 21. He now lives in a village in rural Poland where he works with teenagers with behavioural problems who fight and yell abuse. He declines the advances of a young blonde named Ewa, saying he is already spoken for. However, celibacy is not the only reason for his rejection. Adam knows that he desires men and that his embrace of the priesthood has been a flight from his own sexuality. When he meets Łukasz, the strange and taciturn son of a simple rural family, Adam’s self-imposed abstinence becomes a heavy burden.
Małgośka Szumowska’s visually powerful film, charged with striking imagery from Christ’s Passion, dares to broach the still taboo topic of homosexuality in the priesthood. Confronted with his ‘forbidden’ desires, her protagonist experiences both moments of bliss and utter despair. A film about confused emotions, repression and loneliness – and the possibility of perhaps finding oneself after all.

SYNOPSIS | Their conversations about love and life and everything under the sun began seventeen years ago. In "Before Sunrise" (1995) an American man, Jesse, met Frenchwoman Céline on the train to Vienna. They spent the whole night walking the Viennese streets, philosophising, arguing and flirting. At sunrise they parted on the railway platform, promising to meet again. Their paths didn’t cross until nine years later, in "Before Sunset" (2004). This time, the pair spent a day in Paris discussing their unhappy relationships and rediscovering their feelings for each other. In "Before Midnight" we discover that Jessie and Céline have stayed together and are now spending a holiday in Greece with their daughters. The world of emotions is still their preferred topic of conversation, but it is now their own relationship which is put to the test. The daily grind has certainly left its mark.
Once again the actors have collaborated on the screenplay; once again, all human life is here in their dialogue and, once more, the end is uncertain. Can a romantic night in a hotel save their love?

SYNOPSIS | Boy, a young widower with native American roots, lives in a desert in the USA contaminated by nuclear tests. In this desolate place, surrounded by ‘katchina’ dolls which the indigenous population believes possess magical powers, he awaits the end of the world. His refuge is suddenly invaded by Harry and Buffy, a couple second honeymooning in an attempt to save their marriage. When their Bentley breaks down in the middle of nowhere, Boy offers to help. But then, hoping to cross over into a better world with Buffy, he starts treating them like prisoners. When Dark Blood’s leading actor River Phoenix died suddenly ten days before the end of the shoot in 1993, the film’s insurance company became the owner of the unfinished material. Years later, director George Sluizer managed to save his footage from being destroyed. In January 2012 he decided to finish the film by reading aloud off-screen the missing scenes from the screenplay. The resulting work is an existentialist latter-day Western which derives much of its evocative power from the presence of its leading man, who was himself teetering on the brink of death.

SYNOPSIS | Raimund Gregorius is a Latin teacher from Berne. When he encounters a book by the Portuguese poet and doctor Amadeu de Prado, he drops everything and takes the night train to Lisbon. He is determined to find out more about this writer who appears to have been obsessed by the very same questions that plague him: the purpose of human deeds and the unrealised potential of each and every life. His restless quest across Lisbon uncovers a contradictory portrait of a clever and brave yet conflicted man who lived at the time of Salazar’s dictatorship. Amadeu is the son of a conformist judge. His closest friend is Jorge, the son of a persecuted officer from the opposition. Their friendship almost comes to an end when Amadeu is obliged to follow his oath and save the life of one of the regime’s thugs. But then he too is forced to go underground. There he meets and falls in love with the beautiful and intelligent Estefania – who also happens to be Jorge’s girlfriend … As Gregorius pieces together the writer’s puzzling life, his investigations become a journey of self-discovery.
"Night Train to Lisbon" is the screen adaptation of Pascal Mercier’s best-selling novel.

SYNOPSIS | When their cave is destroyed the Stone Age Croods family has to find a new home in a strange and unpredictable world. Mother Nature is still in her experimental phase; she’s busy creating the most unusual creatures and hasn’t even finished planning the continents. Who will these last survivors of a prehistoric era choose to follow on their journey into the unknown? Will it be Grug, father and head of the tribe who sees danger at every turn? Or will they put their trust in young Guy, who is bursting with new ideas and who, much to Grug’s chagrin, also falls in love with his sprightly daughter, Eep? In a world full of challenges it appears that inspirational youth might be a better option if they are to survive. A painful lesson for Papa Grug. But in the end everybody gets something out of learning to overcome their fears. Last but not least, they discover that every family member already has everything they need to survive – each other.
With a lot of wit and opulence, Christopher Sanders and Kirk DeMicco have created a 3D fantasy world with family values which don’t seem to have changed since the Stone Age.

SYNOPSIS | The story of two kung fu masters: he comes from China’s south; she is from the north. His name is Ip Man; hers is Gong Er. Their paths cross in his hometown of Foshan on the eve of the Japanese invasion in 1936. China is in turmoil and the country’s south teeters on the brink of partition from the north. Gong Er’s father is a renowned grandmaster. He too travels to Foshan. The legendary brothel The Golden Pavilion, where the country’s best martial artists converge, is to be the venue for his retirement ceremony. This tale of betrayal, challenge, honour and love plays out against the chaotic backdrop of war and occupation.
This is not the first time Wong Kar Wai has turned his hand to a martial arts film. "Ashes of Time" (1994), was a feast of visual impressions suffused with a profound sense of melancholy. Clashing swords, fighting fists and acrobatic bodies – in the new epic "The Grandmaster" external actions are similarly inseparable from the internal battles of the protagonists, as feelings are translated into movements, and motion becomes emotion.
